Past

The traditional cricket transcends time and place because the very nature of the game remains a timeless classic. Some punters have already said in old cricket journals that it is the only game that is played in the heavens. Historically Perth Suburban Cricket Club is not new because its beginning goes back at least 20 years! The lazy days of summer and pressures of a new socio-cultural environment in Perth brought a very diverse group of young people together for a common purpose in displaying their cricket skills to the locals. It was of no surprise then that in the in the summer of 1988-89 this small group of overseas students from Pakistan , South Africa and Sri-Lanka formalised the idea of some form of organized cricket at Wellington Square (Known as “Recreation Park” in 1880s) East Perth- the historic home of Western Australia’s cricket. In 1989-90 season this gave rise to “Lanka Lions Cricket Club” which entered into the then Perth Mercantile Cricket Competition in with much fanfare and music. That same season saw the Lanka Lions reach the grand finale. In 1990-91 the Lions folded which then paved the way for “Perth Greens Cricket Club”- a Pakistani and Indian students’ social sports network to come to the fore. For two years this club played with great enthusiasm and zeal with some memorable wins earning good respect from other clubs. Thereafter in 1993 to the 1995 the Club changed its name to East Perth Cricket Club. The East Perth Cricket Club saw some good quality player imports from UAE and Pakistan play in the Perth Mercantile competition for two years. In 1995 most players left for interstate and overseas after completion of their studies and this had an adverse impact on the club. As a consequence the East Perth Cricket Club folded. In 2001-2002 season some ex-players returned from interstate and new cricket enthusiasts had a meeting to revive cricket in some competitive form. A team was then assembled to play in the Hills A grade competition under the banner of “Swans”. It was a tough season for the team and few wins against some very formidable teams. It was another good opportunity to make new friends in the Hills area of Perth and the team had good support from the President of Hills Cricket Association. In 2002-2003, the Swans amalgamated with Edith Cowan University team to from a single club under the banner of “Edith Cowan Cricket Club”. The two teams were registered to play in Perth Cricket Association Kookaburra League. In 2002-03 season the one-day side reached the quarter finals but lost to a better side Bayswater Postel cricket team. Later that year Edith Cowan Cricket Club folded because of lack of funding from the university. Most of the players moved on to join other clubs. The remaining players decided to carry on to form a new club. Perth Suburban Cricket Club Inc (PSCC). was officially registered on 3 March 2004. In the 2003-04 season PSCC reached the grand final only to lose to Osborne Park Cricket Club. In 2006-07 PSCC again reached the grand final but lost to Mount Lawley Cricket Club in a good spirited but high intensity game.

Present

PSCC has good support from local businesses, sporting bodies in the metropolitan Perth. The Club has a maturing membership and has plans to develop into a two- team club so that it can promote cricket in Perth amongst its diverse youth and multicultural communities.

Future

The long term plan of the club is to develop into a viable community cricket club serving the East Perth and inner city area of Perth. PSCC aims to promote the game of cricket, advocate and promote the development of sports facilities so that it can help bring diverse communities together under the one banner of Western Australia.
